Conway, S.C. – Savannah Brooks and Kristin Williams each achieved season-high scores, marking 26 and 23 points respectively, as Coastal Carolina surged ahead in the second half for an 83-68 triumph against Georgia State during a Sun Belt conference women’s basketball match on Thursday afternoon at the HTC Center.

Brooks spearheaded the scoring with 26 points, while Williams contributed 23 points. The pair combined for 11 three-pointers, enabling Coastal to secure a 17-point advantage in the third quarter before comfortably finishing with their eighth home win without a defeat. Williams completed the match with 7-of-14 from long distance after missing her initial five attempts. “I kept repeating to myself that the next one will go in, until it finally did,” remarked Williams.

Coastal concluded the game 15-of-38 from beyond the arc, with Williams netting seven of those in the concluding 22 minutes. Brooks added four three-point baskets and secured 10 rebounds, achieving her first double-double of the season. “She performed exceptionally well today,” stated Coastal head coach Kevin Pederson regarding Brooks’ performance.

“We commenced the game 2-of-16 from the three-point line, but we had to persist in shooting them. Then we hit a stretch where we made 10-of-13 and shifted the momentum of the game,” commented Pederson. “We needed to dictate the pace. We utilized our small lineup, and it transformed the outcome.”

Mallory Bruce also reached double digits with 14 points, while Jayden Marable added nine points alongside four assists. Coastal now holds a 13-3 overall record and is 4-2 within the conference.

Mya Williams was among four players in double figures for Georgia State, which now stands at 7-10 overall and 1-5 in the Sun Belt.

Coastal seized the lead by scoring five consecutive points, establishing a 14-9 advantage late in the first quarter. However, the Chants did not extend their lead beyond six until a 14-4 scoring burst in the final 1:17 of the second quarter. Williams made three three-pointers during the sequence, including a long bank shot at the buzzer, giving Coastal a 40-29 lead at halftime. Brooks had already recorded 15 points and seven rebounds following the first two quarters, with Williams tallying 11 points.

The advantage grew to 12 points when Brooks replied with a three-pointer at the start of the third quarter. However, the Panthers regrouped with a 9-0 run, narrowing the Chants’ lead to just three, at 43-40. Fortunately, Brooks and Williams were not done shooting from long distance.

Coastal quickly answered back with a 15-5 run, as Williams drained a couple of three-pointers, and Brooks added another, pushing Coastal’s lead to 58-45. Another three-pointer from Williams expanded CCU’s margin to 17 points, at 64-47, late in the third quarter. In total, Coastal featured five players who successfully made three-point shots. This marked the second-highest number of three-pointers for Coastal this season; they made 18 against South Carolina State.

Coastal is set to return to the HTC Center to face James Madison at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Following that, the Chants will play two road games before coming back home to host Marshall at 6 p.m. on Jan. 29, and Louisiana at 1 p.m. on Feb. 1.
