“Cosmic Encounter: Doorbell Camera Captures Dramatic Meteorite Strike in Canada”

For the first occasion, a doorbell camera successfully recorded both the visual and auditory aspects of a meteorite hitting the Earth, denoting a significant advancement in scientific documentation.
In July 2024, Joe Velaidum and his partner, Laura Kelly, observed the remarkable event occurring outside their residence in Marshfield, Prince Edward Island, according to CBC News.
Velaidum’s Ring camera documented the meteorite’s blazing descent and audible impact as it collided with the ground just several feet from his front entrance, leaving an indentation in the walkway and dispersing debris.

The meteorite, identified later as an ordinary chondrite, journeyed from the asteroid belt situated between Mars and Jupiter prior to its unfortunate crash.
Upon discovering dark debris on his land, Velaidum consulted University of Alberta meteorite curator Chris Herd. According to CBC News, Herd substantiated the rock’s extraterrestrial origins and designated it the Charlottetown Meteorite, paying tribute to its closeness to the island’s capital. In total, 95 grams of fragments were gathered, with analyses revealing the rock’s rapid entry, estimated at 60,000 km/h, before decelerating to 200 km/h at impact.
“This occurrence is truly remarkable,” CBC News quoted Herd. “It’s the first occasion both the sights and sounds of a meteorite impact have been documented. From a scientific standpoint, it’s unprecedented.”
The newly surfaced video grants not only extraordinary visuals but also unique audio evidence of the meteorite’s collision, a groundbreaking advancement for scientists investigating these exceptional occurrences.
Velaidum narrowly avoided injury and recounted, “Had I stayed just minutes longer, I could’ve found myself right in the impact area. It’s incredible to contemplate that something traversed millions of miles to land right at my doorstep.”
The happening left both Velaidum and Kelly in awe of the universe’s unpredictability. “It’s humbling,” Velaidum reflected on the chances of such a near encounter.
As reported by PetaPixel, this meteorite represents the first ever recorded on Prince Edward Island, contributing a distinct chapter to the island’s narrative. Herd stressed its importance: “Every occurrence like this yields a new sample from space—a testament to the marvels of our cosmos.”
