Governor Newsom Honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day with 2025 Proclamation

PROCLAMATION

The call of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to fight against inequity and safeguard the most cherished principles of democracy remains significant today, over 50 years since his departure. As we tackle the numerous obstacles faced by our state and country, his influential example serves as a lasting motivation that showcases the difference we can create by coming together despite our variances.

Dr. King’s legacy serves as a reminder that ethical leadership does not necessitate an individual to be in an elected role or possess authority. Rather, to wield moral influence is to have the determination to act righteously. Empowered by the courage of civil rights champions prior to him and collaborating with a wave of activists, Dr. King was instrumental in reshaping how our nation perceives itself and its future.

We have yet to completely fulfill Dr. King’s dream. California is actively working to tackle enduring issues and obstacles still encountered by many African Americans, guaranteeing that everyone has the opportunity to attain the California Dream. Motivated by Dr. King’s legacy, let us unite to advocate for justice, broaden opportunities, and forge a brighter tomorrow for all.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GAVIN NEWSOM, Governor of the State of California, do hereby declare January 15, 2025, as “Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.”
