Sunita Williams Takes the Leap: Her First Daring Spacewalk Adventure!

NASA astronaut Suni Williams, one of the two cosmonauts stranded on the International Space Station, conducted a spacewalk on Thursday, marking her first excursion outside since joining the crew seven months prior.

Ms. Williams and fellow astronaut Butch Wilmore were scheduled to return to Earth after a week-long mission in June 2024, but their homecoming has been postponed due to a technical complication.

They are now expected to return in late March or potentially April.

Ms. Williams, a seasoned astronaut with numerous spacewalks under her belt from previous ISS missions, collaborated with astronaut Nick Hague on Thursday to perform essential maintenance on the station.

Their duties entail fixing apparatus that controls the station’s orientation, placing light filters on the NICER X-ray telescope, and substituting a reflector device on an international docking adapter.

Moreover, the duo will examine access points and connector tools that are slated for upcoming maintenance on the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer, a particle physics experimental module attached to the ISS.

Ms. Williams is scheduled for a second spacewalk on January 23 alongside Mr. Wilmore.

Together, they will detach a radio frequency group antenna assembly (a set of components designed for radio wave transmission and reception) and gather surface samples for microorganism testing.

Additionally, they will ready a backup elbow joint for the Canadarm2 robotic arm by arranging it in the preferred configuration for swift replacement if necessary.

Each spacewalk is predicted to last approximately six and a half hours.

Nicole McElroy, a Flight Director at NASA, stated in a press conference prior to the spacewalk that “The pathway to our preparations for all these EVAs (extra-vehicular activities) has been progressing well.

“The crew on board has been reviewing their procedures, getting acquainted with all the tasks, and are genuinely enthusiastic and eager to step outside.”

Ms. Williams and Mr. Wilmore were supposed to embark on what was projected to be an eight-day mission to the ISS on Boeing’s Starliner in June 2024.

However, technical challenges including helium leaks and thruster failures rendered the Starliner unfit for their return.

In spite of these obstacles, the astronauts have continued their duties aboard the ISS while awaiting a safe trip back home.
