A recent analysis revealed that a picturesque state in the Southeast emerged as the most sought-after location for relocation in 2024, according to U-Haul.

The moving and storage firm recently released its U-Haul Growth Index, which tracks the number of customers utilizing one-way U-Haul vehicles annually. South Carolina, the victor of 2024, displaced Texas, which had held the top position for several prior years.

“Growth rankings are calculated based on each state’s net gain (or loss) of customers using one-way U-Haul equipment during a calendar year,” explained the analysis. “The U-Haul Growth Index is derived from over 2.5 million one-way U-Haul truck, trailer, and U-Box® moving container transactions that take place yearly.”

While Texas remains high on the list, U-Haul indicated that the Palmetto State actually removed Texas from its top place last year.

“Texas has been positioned first or second in U-Haul Growth States since 2016,” the firm noted. “Florida has ranked fourth or higher every year since 2015.”

“Among all the U-Haul movers coming and going from the Palmetto State in 2024, over 51.7% were arrivals,” the company added.

In a statement, U-Haul International president J.T. Taylor stated that the 2024 state-to-state movements “reaffirm consumer patterns that have been noticeable for a considerable period.”

“Migration towards the Southeast and Southwest continues as families evaluate their living costs, job prospects, quality of life, and other elements influencing their decision to move to a new state,” Taylor mentioned. “Out-migration is still prevalent in numerous markets across the Northeast, Midwest, and West Coast — particularly California.”

“U-Haul continues to broaden its network, rental inventory, and self-storage presence, ensuring that wherever individuals relocate in 2025, we will be ready to accommodate their requirements,” he concluded.

The rise in migration towards Southern states is not unexpected, given other recent studies. Last year, the National Association of Realtors’ 2024 Migration Trends report also indicated that Southern states were the most preferred regions for relocation.

Interestingly, only 1% of individuals who moved south did so due to the climate, as per the report. Meanwhile, 42% of Americans relocating to another state cited reasons related to housing, while 26% indicated family motivations and 16% moved for job opportunities.
