“Discover the European City Where Expats Thrive: A New Report Unveils the Best Quality of Life!”

More than 87 million individuals are believed to reside as expatriates worldwide, with numerous having relocated abroad in pursuit of an enhanced standard of living.

The global consulting agency Mercer recently designated Zurich as the premier destination for expatriates, based on financial, social, and ecological criteria.

The firm published its yearly Quality of Living City Ranking, assessing urban areas that offer the most favorable living conditions for international employees. Mercer takes into account elements such as governmental stability, healthcare, education, infrastructure, and cultural atmosphere.

“This year, Zurich, Switzerland, has secured the top rank, bolstered by its remarkable public services, minimal crime rates, and vibrant cultural offerings, all supported by robust infrastructure and a commitment to sustainability,” the report indicates, noting that the Swiss metropolis has introduced multiple new direct flight paths to and from various continents, enhancing its connectivity. 

The largest city in Switzerland functions as an international financial center, hosting over 400,000 residents, which constitutes around 28 percent of its population, being foreign-born. It is segmented into 12 districts, with the historical Old Town at its core, dating back over 2,000 years. 

Earlier this year, Zurich also earned the title of the planet’s smartest city due to its innovative incorporation of cutting-edge technologies that enhance urban life. The esteemed Economist Intelligence Unit recognized it as the third most livable city in 2024, achieving perfect ratings in education and healthcare sectors.

However, if you are contemplating moving there, be aware that it has consistently been listed among the priciest cities globally. Mercer ranks it as the third most costly location for residency, following Hong Kong and Singapore. 

Switzerland boasts the most cities — four — within the top ten of Mercer’s 2024 assessment. Geneva has risen two positions this year to rank third, while Bern and Basel have each advanced four spots to now occupy the ninth and tenth positions, respectively. 

Vienna, which led the ranking last year, fell to second place in 2024. Nonetheless, the Austrian capital presents an appealing equilibrium of living quality and expense, having been rated 24th in terms of cost of living. 

Auckland (5th) and Vancouver (7th) are the sole non-European cities featured in the top ten. Boston (32nd) is the highest-placed American city on the list, which encompasses 241 cities internationally.

The least favorable cities for expatriates this year are Bangui, Central African Republic (239th), Baghdad, Iraq (240th), and Khartoum, Sudan (241st).
