Envision the Excitement: A Fresh Take on Pixar’s Win or Lose Trailer!

Wisdom can often be a burdensome thing. Consider the trailer unveiled today for Win Or Lose, Pixar’s inaugural TV series. It’s enjoyable, humorous, and visually creative, narrating the story of a softball championship game viewed through various lenses—as long as we refrain from delving too deeply into the edits Disney imposed on the project, removing the trans identity of one of its characters (Chanel Stewart’s Kai) from the series.



Clearly delving into the same realm as the studio’s Inside Out (and particularly its recent sequel), Win Or Lose revolves around empathy almost by definition: Each episode will depict the same occurrences from a varying point of view, with the trailer emphasizing the imaginative manner in which different characters perceive their surroundings. (The umpire, Frank, imagines himself as a fantasy figure adorned with a set of armor that deflects insecurities, while one of the athletes experiences her anxiety as a perpetually enlarging sweat blob hanging from her back.) Similar to those previous films, the series is evidently extracting both humor and emotions from the commonality of diverse human experiences—a strategy that inevitably feels lacking when we know that Disney took deliberate steps to exclude one aspect of that experience from the series due to concerns that parents/politicians might protest. We believe there are remarkable narratives being conveyed here, and many of the visual effects appear fantastic. But it’s disheartening not to inhabit a reality where an enjoyable show like this can simply exist without this self-imposed caveat, where Disney could have trusted its creators to produce something remarkable without allowing fear to dictate revisions at what was allegedly a late stage in production.
