After 40 years in the sports card and memorabilia industry, Mark Hochstaetter, proprietor of Papa Hawks Sports & Collectibles in Golden Valley, is stepping down.

Saturday marks the final operating day for the shop.

“This doesn’t sit well,” remarked Robert Lease, a loyal patron. “You just come in and browse, and he’s got it sorted.”

Papa Hawks has served as the go-to destination for those collecting sports memorabilia.

“If I need a few cards to finish a set, he’s got what I require here,” Lease stated.

The shop boasts millions of sports cards, photographs, and signatures within its collection. Hochstaetter announced discounts on his entire stock shortly after declaring his retirement in November.

“It’s been wild. We’ve seen a surge in foot traffic. Many individuals have come in, some visiting two, three, four, even ten times. It’s been fantastic,” he shared.

Fantastic not merely for moving stock, but also for the chance to bid a final farewell to the patrons who have backed his shop over the years.

“It’s been a thrilling journey. I’ve relished it,” shared Hochstaetter, who embarked on this venture after departing from his corporate position.

Mark Hochstaetter, the proprietor of Papa Hawks Sports & Collectibles, is retiring after 40 years in the industry.

It’s been an enjoyable experience for his staff as well.

“In a way, it’s my second home,” expressed employee Vincent Beltaos.

To Beltaos, Papa Hawks represents more than just a retail store. It’s a venue where enthusiasts can convene to discuss sports and their favored teams.

“At day’s end, as we wrap things up, it’s those brief conversations before departure. It’s about the little moments,” he remarked.

Any unsold items during this concluding weekend will be moved to an online auction platform, indicating that there remains a substantial amount of sorting to accomplish.

This explains why Hochstaetter hasn’t fully processed the emotions yet.

“I anticipate the emotional aspect will surface when I close the door for the last time,” he stated. “That’s when it will truly impact me.”

However, that day is still weeks away. Yet today focuses on appreciation.

“I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone for the support over the years,” Hochstaetter conveyed.

The online auction is scheduled to commence on January 31 and continues until February 10.
