The Iowa State Cyclones (3-2, 0-0 Big 12) are set to journey to Fort Worth on Friday, Jan. 17, for a 5 p.m. clash against the Horned Frogs (1-1, 0-0 Big 12) marking their inaugural Big 12 confrontation of the season. Afterward, the Cyclones will head to Denton on Saturday, Jan. 18, for a 1 p.m. battle against North Texas (3-1, 0-0 AAC).

THE RIVALS – TCU & North Texas

The Cyclones are preparing for their fifth and sixth dual events of the season.

This marks the sixth matchup in history against TCU, with Iowa State leading the series 6-2-1. The Horned Frogs have also clashed with Arkansas this season, an opponent the Cyclones faced during the Hawkeye Invite in November.

Iowa State has only competed against the Mean Green on two occasions, leading 2-0 in the overall standings. North Texas’s sole defeat this season came against New Mexico State in their initial dual, finishing 138-104.

LATEST COMPETITION – UNI

The Cyclones celebrated a triumphant senior day on Jan 11, defeating the Panthers 180-116.

Corinne Guist delivered an exceptional performance for the Cyclones, securing victories in both the 1000 free and the 500 free.

Freshmen Grace Swoboda and Anja Peck showcased impressive displays for the Cyclones. Swoboda triumphed in the 100 breast and played a pivotal role in the Cyclones’ success in the 400 medley relay. Peck achieved second-place finishes in both the 400 medley relay and the 100 breast while clinching first place in the 200 breast.

Fifth-year Winter Craig attained her fifth podium finish in the 200 fly and her third in the 100 fly, winning both competitions during the event.

Madi Dohrn marked her first triumph of the season in the 200 back, with Emma Kuhn finishing closely behind in second and Fallon DeWitt in third.

In the diving competitions, newcomer Maggie Bendell took first place in the 3-meter, followed by Ally Blumenfeld in second position and Kate Mitchell in third. All three narrowly missed achieving NCAA Zone Cut qualifying scores.

Blumenfeld finished second in the 1-meter event with Mitchell close behind in third.

UPCOMING FOCUS – Breaststroke and Diving

The Cyclones have displayed remarkable prowess in breaststroke disciplines, achieving the top three positions in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke during their competition against UNI.

Likewise, the diving squad has excelled, securing top-three finishes in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events against UNI. Many scores were close to NCAA Zone qualifying standards, providing momentum for the Cyclones in diving events.

NEXT UP – Kansas

Iowa State is scheduled to visit Lawrence, Kansas, where they will compete against the Jayhawks (2-3, 0-0 Big 12) in their second Big 12 event of the year on Feb 7, 2025, at 3 p.m.
