Detroit, Mich (WNEM) – January marks National Human Trafficking Prevention Month, and the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) is heightening awareness to fight against it.

The efforts of the gaming board aim to guarantee that gaming establishments provide secure environments for all individuals concerned.

Under U.S. law, human trafficking is characterized as when one party employs force, deception, or coercion to force another person into labor, services, or commercial sex against their consent. Nevertheless, there is an exception for minors, where any exchange of sexual activity for something of value constitutes trafficking.

It is essential not to conflate trafficking with smuggling. Smuggling pertains to the act of movement across borders and does not involve force, fraud, or coercion.

“Human trafficking is a grave issue that impacts communities across the nation, and gaming establishments are becoming an increasing focus in the national discourse regarding how traffickers may take advantage of vulnerable individuals,” stated MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams. “As regulators of the gaming sector, the Michigan Gaming Control Board acknowledges the significance of proactively addressing this matter and is committed to ensuring the safety and welfare of all individuals in our casinos.”

Anyone can fall victim to human trafficking. Specific elements may elevate the risk of vulnerability, which can include:

  • Recent relocation
  • Substance abuse
  • Psychological health challenges
  • Involvement in the foster care system
  • Being a runaway or homeless youth

The National Human Trafficking Hotline reported identifying 254 cases involving various forms of exploitation in 2023. Among those cases, 506 victims were documented.

If you or someone you are aware of is facing human trafficking and requires assistance, please call the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-383-7888, or text 233733. You can also reach them online at humantraffickinghotline.org. The hotline offers services in 200 languages and operates 24/7.
