Nintendo Unveils Next-Gen Switch 2: Bigger Screen and Enhanced Controllers Await!

Nintendo announced on Thursday that its highly anticipated new Switch 2 hybrid will be released this year, highlighting an enlarged screen and improved controllers, as the firm seeks to revitalize its underperforming hardware division.

The company showcased the Switch 2 in a promotional video. The beginning of the clip displays a current model of the console before detaching the two “joy-con” controllers to enlarge the dimensions of the tablet they connect to. The video subsequently reveals the joy cons enlarging in size and transitioning to a matte black hue.

The joysticks and controller casings are available in variations of light blue and red. The joy con casings appear to attach to the controllers magnetically when detached from the Switch 2’s primary tablet for supporting the console on its stand or docking it for play on a household television.

The Switch 2 also incorporates an enhanced kickstand that is U-shaped and can be positioned further back, allowing the console to nearly lie flat against a surface. The device’s design resembles concept images that had been leaked online in anticipation of the Switch 2’s official unveiling.

Nintendo did not specify a release date for the Switch 2, but mentioned it would disclose further information during its upcoming “Nintendo Direct” online presentation scheduled for April 2. The company confirmed that the Switch 2 will be backward compatible, allowing users to play older Switch titles on the new device.

Nintendo is optimistic that the Switch 2 will enhance console sales. The current generation Switch debuted way back in March 2017 and has now achieved an almost eight-year lifespan. Most console manufacturers typically wait approximately six to seven years before introducing a new model.

Nintendo reported a net profit of 27.7 billion Japanese yen ($178.2 million) for its September quarter, marking a decline of about 69% year-over-year. Company revenues fell 17% year-over-year to 276.7 billion Japanese yen.
