PlayStation Pulls the Plug on Two Ambitious Titles, One Featuring God of War’s Live Service!

PlayStation has scrapped two live-service titles, one of which was allegedly set in the God of War realm.

In a remark to Bloomberg, Sony verified the termination of the two live-service titles—one from Bend Studio and another from Bluepoint Games. The project being developed by Bluepoint Games was purportedly a live-service God of War title.

Sony also indicated that although the studios will not be shut down, it could not confirm whether these cancellations would lead to job reductions. Nonetheless, Sony is collaborating with the studios to assess their future endeavors.

In the previous year, Bend Studio disclosed that it was developing a new IP, but it remains uncertain if it relates to the now-canceled venture. Sony purchased Bluepoint Games, known for the PS5 exclusive Demon’s Souls remake, in 2021. The studio reportedly contributed to God of War Ragnarok from 2020 to 2022 before its next project was scrapped.

PlayStation’s live-service strategy has yielded mixed outcomes thus far. While Helldivers 2 achieved remarkable success and garnered numerous awards, Concord was a significant failure, ultimately resulting in its permanent closure along with the shutdown of developer Firewalk Studios.

Sony also canceled its multiplayer The Last of Us game in December 2023, mere months after Destiny developer Bungie (which Sony acquired) reportedly assessed its capacity to engage players over the long haul.
