Government funding is set to be allocated to creative firms and initiatives throughout the U.K. due to a £60 million ($73 million) investment package announced on Friday as the Labour Party government aims to stimulate expansion in the sector as part of its broader economic enhancement strategy.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s team indicated on Friday that the investment proposal would aid “hundreds” of enterprises, “representing the initial phase of the government’s sector strategy for creative industries.” The program will encompass £40 million ($49 million) aimed at investments for “emerging video game studios, British music and film exports, alongside creative enterprises outside London,” in addition to supporting local music venues.

In recent years, British media and entertainment companies have sought to transcend their traditional London-centric operational models in response to demands for increased content production outside of London and narratives highlighting locations beyond the capital.

On Friday, Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy is congregating over 250 creative enterprises and cultural influencers at The Glasshouse International Centre for Music in Gateshead, England, part of the larger Newcastle area, to articulate how the government plans to collaborate with the sector to “enhance growth and investment,” as stated in a release.

During the gathering, Nandy will officially reveal that the government’s focal regions for the creative industries include the North East, Greater Manchester, the Liverpool City Region, West Yorkshire, the West Midlands, Greater London, the West of England, South Wales, Glasgow, the Edinburgh-Dundee corridor, and Belfast in Northern Ireland.

“Our creative sectors, spanning from film to fashion, music, and advertising, are unquestionably world-class and play a vital role in aiding us to fulfill this government’s objective of promoting economic growth across all regions of the U.K.,” stated Nandy. “The £60 million funding increment will empower creative and cultural organizations nationwide to supercharge growth by revitalizing local venues, generating employment, supporting businesses, and distributing chances throughout the country. However, this is just the beginning of our aspirations, which is why the creative sectors are central to the imminent Industrial Strategy and will remain vital in this government’s Plan for Change.”

U.K. Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves, added: “Our foremost objective is to bolster the economy, and our creative industries represent a British triumph that has a significant role to play. Building upon our initiatives to enhance our AI sector, this represents another stride as we accelerate efforts to achieve growth so we can put more money into households’ hands.”

Recently, Foreign Secretary David Lammy announced a new Soft Power Council, which will function as a consultative body for the government, “to promote the U.K. internationally and stimulate investment and growth domestically,” highlighting the importance Starmer’s administration places on the creative and cultural sector.

“Soft power is essential to the U.K.’s influence and standing globally,” Lammy remarked on Friday. “I am often amazed by the immense admiration and regard that our music, sports, and educational entities foster across every continent. Yet, as a nation, we have not adopted a sufficiently strategic approach to these valuable assets. Effectively leveraging soft power can help foster relationships, build trust, enhance our security, and stimulate economic growth. For this reason, I have established the Soft Power Council to harness British expertise as we strive to redefine Britain’s role in the international arena, rejuvenate alliances, and establish new partnerships.”
