COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – The country is getting ready for the prohibition of TikTok following an unsuccessful appeal to the Supreme Court.

The proprietors of TikTok contended that the prohibition of the application infringes on the First Amendment; however, this claim was dismissed by the Supreme Court on Friday, clearing the path for the ban to take effect on Sunday. The sole option left to preserve the application now would be to sell it to a buyer in the U.S.

This action has shown to be contentious, particularly among users and creators of the application. Creators such as Kurt Tocci maintained that the economic and cultural ramifications of the application are too significant to warrant an outright ban.

Tocci, a native of Colorado, relocated to Los Angeles to chase his aspirations of working in television and film, but eventually developed a passion for sharing content on social media.

“I somewhat missed the whole social media wave, like the initial surge of everything,” Tocci remarked. “Then, as 2019 unfolded, I became increasingly engrossed in it and encountered more opportunities to collaborate with fellow creators.”

Similar to many creators, Tocci noted a substantial surge in followers from content produced during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

“I conceived the idea of, ‘what if Disney characters were also in quarantine?’ since everyone else was, and if all their songs were transformed into lyrics about COVID, that was the objective,” Tocci stated.

After this video was shared, Tocci mentioned he witnessed his follower count quadruple in just a few days. Following that, he aimed to sustain that momentum by releasing more content that resonated with viewers or encouraged engagement.

“Consequently, I managed to grow steadily across all platforms, and that has remained the goal; I’m still striving for it,” he shared.

Although he was able to thrive on all social media platforms, he indicated that TikTok became a prominent and distinctive one. Tocci noted he managed to earn some income from TikTok, yet the majority of his revenue and engagement came from platforms such as YouTube and Instagram.

“Let me be frank; honestly, the statistics on TikTok, in my perspective, are inconsequential. They truly don’t matter,” Tocci stated. “It’s not about the numbers. It’s profoundly about the community.”

Tocci elaborated on TikTok’s format. Most users, he said, engage with short-form content through the “For You” page, instead of any page dedicated specifically to the accounts they follow.

“Unless your video is deemed ‘worthy’ of the ‘for you’ page, it will not be viewed by 1.8 million individuals. It simply won’t happen,” he commented.

Nevertheless, Tocci clarified that TikTok possesses considerable viral potential, providing creators with a significant tool for increasing their visibility. Moreover, he remarked, as demonstrated in 2020, it aids individuals in forming a sense of community.

“Therefore, to lose that equates to removing people’s outlets. As I mentioned, it transcends mere financial implications; it serves as an escape or interest for many,” Tocci expressed, “it’s no different than abolishing movie theaters; you are stripping away an outlet that exists in someone’s life.”

He articulated that it’s a means of exchanging culture and community, similar to how he frequently shares his connections to Colorado culture.

“Without a doubt, Colorado will always be home, so I strive to weave that in whenever feasible,” he remarked.

He further emphasized the app’s potential to stimulate the economy by offering a way for video content creators to generate revenue, some of whom may have depended on it during the pandemic and many of whom continue to rely on it now for supplementary income.

“Many rely on this as income. It’s akin to eliminating Uber, just as it would be with Lyft. It’s as though you’re saying, ‘oh, we’re going back to taxis,’” he elaborated.

Tocci also highlighted the app’s potential life-saving applications, as he has witnessed during the recent wildfires in LA.

“Individuals acquire their news from TikTok,” he stated. “They truly do; in the event of a natural disaster, I can swiftly grab my phone, record about it, and post it, immediately notifying people, just like that.”

He also indicated that the app has raised awareness for specific movements.

President Joe Biden has characterized the app as a threat to national security, consequently signing the ban into law; however, Tocci dismissed this as a trivial matter.

“Our phones are literally manufactured in China,” he remarked. “So, if they were intent on acquiring our information, they would undoubtedly have it; what do you want? Photos of my cat? Go right ahead.”

Tocci expressed that this reasoning is insufficient to justify the removal of something that has demonstrated such cultural and economic significance, and although President Biden indicated that the future of the app will be determined by the next administration after the ban, Tocci expressed hope for the ban to be overturned.
