“Navigating Salem District: Your Weekend Travel Guide for Icy Roads and Warming Weather”

SALEM – Winter conditions are anticipated to arrive in western Virginia on Sunday, Jan. 19.  Snow, rain, or a wintry mix of precipitation may occur, therefore motorists should monitor the forecast and modify travel arrangements, especially if traveling to the northern region of the state. Roads could quickly become slippery or covered in snow depending on the storm’s path.

As is the case with any winter weather situation, the Virginia Department of Transportation personnel and contractors will be operating continuously to ensure roads are navigable, starting with interstates and primary highways (those numbered 1-599). Once snow accumulation reaches approximately two inches, plow operators will commence clearing the slushy mixture from the roadways.

After precipitation ceases and primary roads are cleared, crews will redirect their efforts to secondary roads (those numbered 600 and above), residential streets, and unpaved roads. “Passable” indicates that the road has been cleared and/or treated with abrasives and chemicals, typically involving crushed stone and salt. It does not imply that the snow has been entirely removed down to bare pavement.

In the upcoming days, temperatures are predicted to drop sharply, leading to refreeze and potential ice accumulation on secondary roads, residential streets, and unpaved paths. Temperatures must exceed freezing for icy conditions to cease affecting travel.
