No travel warning issued in Northwest Minnesota
Strong winds and restricted visibility create dangerous driving conditions
BEMIDJI, Minn. – (noon) The Minnesota Department of Transportation advises against travel on highways in northwestern Minnesota due to strong winds resulting in drifting snow and zero visibility. The no travel warning encompasses the following routes:
- Highway 1: North Dakota border to Thief River Falls
- Highway 2: Crookston to East Grand Forks
- Highway 9: Crookston to Ada
- Highway 11: North Dakota border to Karlstad
- Highway 75: Perley to the Canadian border
- Highway 200: Highway 75 to Ada
- Highway 220: Climax to Alvarado
- Highway 175: North Dakota border to Highway 59
No Travel Advised indicates that visibility has dropped to a level where travel is extremely perilous. Motorists are encouraged to refrain from driving in these regions until wind speeds diminish and conditions enhance.
Drivers should prepare for fluctuating weather and stay informed about road conditions at 511mn.org. Travelers should organize accordingly with an emergency supply kit and apparel for severe cold.
MnDOT snowplow operators will fulfill their duties to ensure highways are secure, and motorists should keep in mind to:
- Remain vigilant for snowplows, which frequently turn or exit with little notice
- Maintain distance at least 10 car lengths behind the plow. Avoid driving into a snow cloud.
- Reduce speed to a safe level for the present conditions.
- Activate your headlights and buckle your seat belt.
- Switch off cruise control.
- Exercise patience and remember that snowplows are working to enhance road conditions for your journey.
