Safe Travels Alert: Northwest Minnesota’s Clear Skies Continue

MINNESOTA (Valley News Live) – The Minnesota Department of Transportation recommends no travel on highways in the northwestern segment of Minnesota due to strong winds leading to blowing snow and limited visibility. The no travel advisory encompasses the following routes:

• Highway 1- North Dakota border to Thief River Falls
• Highway 2- Crookston to East Grand Forks
• Highway 9- Crookston to Ada
• Highway 11- North Dakota border to Karlstad
• Highway 75- Perley to Canadian border
• Highway 200- Highway 75 to Ada
• Highway 220 – Climax to Alvarado
• Highway 175- North Dakota border to Highway 59

The No Travel Advisory indicates that visibility has diminished to a level where it is hazardous to journey. It is recommended that motorists refrain from traveling in these areas until the winds calm down and conditions get better.

Additionally, it’s prudent to verify the roadway conditions at 511mn.org and come prepared with an emergency kit and clothing suitable for extreme cold.

MnDOT snowplow operators are urging drivers to:

• Remain vigilant for snowplows, which may turn or exit often and sometimes with little notice
• Maintain a distance of at least 10 car lengths behind the plow. Avoid driving into a snow cloud.
• Reduce speed to a safe limit given the current circumstances.
• Activate your headlights and wear your seatbelt.
• Disengage the cruise control.
• Be patient and keep in mind that snowplows are working to enhance road conditions for your journey.
• Avoid driving while distracted.
