SALEM – Winter conditions are anticipated to arrive in western Virginia on Sunday, Jan. 19. Snow, rain, or a wintry mix of precipitation are likely, thus drivers should heed the forecast and modify travel arrangements, particularly when heading toward the northern region of the state. Roads may become slippery or snow-laden swiftly depending on the storm’s trajectory.

Like any winter weather situation, crews and contractors from the Virginia Department of Transportation will be operational around the clock to ensure roads are navigable, starting with interstates and primary roadways (those numbered 1-599). Once snow builds up to approximately two inches, the plows will commence clearing the slushy accumulation from the roadways.

After the precipitation ceases and main roads are navigable, the teams will transition to secondary roads (those numbered 600 and higher), local streets, and unpaved paths. Navigable signifies that the road has been plowed and/or treated with abrasives and chemicals, typically crushed stone and salt. It does not imply that the snow has been totally removed to reveal blacktop.

In the upcoming days, temperatures are forecasted to drop, leading to refreeze and possible ice formation on secondary roads, local streets, and unpaved paths. Temperatures must exceed freezing for icy conditions to cease impacting travel.

If you are traveling this weekend or early next week, visit 511.vdot.virginia.gov, call 511, or refer to the 511 Virginia mobile application for current updates on road and traffic statuses.

For inquiries or to report dangerous road conditions, reach out to VDOT’s 24-hour Customer Service Center by visiting my.vdot.virginia.gov or calling 800-FOR-ROAD (367-7623).

The Salem District encompasses the counties of Bedford, Botetourt, Carroll, Craig, Floyd, Franklin, Giles, Henry, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski, and Roanoke.
