EVANSTON, Ill. — The No. 15-rated University of Michigan wrestling squad secured seven matches, including all last five, in a comfortable 26-10 victory at Northwestern on Friday evening (Jan. 17) at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

Trailing 10-7 at halftime, the Wolverines leveled the score at 165 pounds and subsequently surged ahead, capturing three of their four bonus victories in the final four bouts. Sophomore/freshman Beau Mantanona spearheaded the charge with a 4-3 ranked victory against Northwestern’s 18th-ranked Max Mayyfield. Mantanona, positioned 21st at 165 pounds, broke the scoreless deadlock with a swift reversal, flipping into a single leg in the air and returning Mayyfield to his back for a pair of points.

Fifth-year senior Joseph Walker, ranked 28th at 174 pounds, implemented a late takedown and rideout to secure an 11-1 major decision over Aiden Vandenbush. Walker executed a single leg in the closing five seconds of the initial period, added a double leg in the second frame, and another in the dying moments of the third to achieve the major margin while finishing with a 1:02 riding-time advantage. Fifth-year senior Jaden Bullock, ranked at 184 pounds, initiated a double leg early leading to his 5-0 decision over Jon Halvorsen. In a bid for the bonus point during the third period, Bullock earned a late stall point but could not secure another score.

Graduate student Jacob Cardenas attained a 16-6 major decision for his second win this season over 12th-ranked Evan Bates at 197 pounds. Cardenas, rated third, scored promptly in the first before going large in the second with a double leg and a four-point tilt following a late restart. He added another takedown in the third, finishing with a 2:31 time lead. Cardenas now stands at 10-0 this season, including 10 bonus victories.

Graduate student Josh Heindselman, ranked 10th at heavyweight, concluded the dual with the most commanding victory of the evening, registering six takedowns and four back points in the first period for a 22-5 technical fall against Dirk Morley. He executed a go-behind takedown with 10 seconds remaining in the period before employing a roll-through half to obtain the near-fall points and terminate the bout prematurely. He remains undefeated at 14-0 this season with 11 bonus wins, including eight technical falls.

Michigan also recorded two victories in the dual’s first half — one overwhelmingly and another determined. Sophomore Sergio Lemley, ranked 11th at 141 pounds, cruised to a 10-2 major decision over 23rd-ranked Chris Cannon. Lemley notched takedowns in both the first and third periods while maintaining control in the second. He captured Cannon’s ankle during a low single and did not release it, achieving his later takedown with 28 seconds left, riding out the match for 2:53 in advantage time. Lemley remains 5-0 in dual matches this season.

Sophomore/freshman Dylan Gilcher fought back to secure a 4-4 tiebreaker triumph over 23rd-ranked Sam Cartella for his first dual win of the season at 149 pounds. Down three points late in the third period, Gilcher scrapped for a go-behind takedown with 16 seconds remaining and rode through the third period to force overtime. Following a scoreless sudden victory, Gilcher rode out the first tiebreaker and adeptly thwarted Cartella in the second for the comeback win.

The Wolverines (4-1, 1-1 Big Ten) will finish their weekend journey against No. 8 Minnesota on Sunday (Jan. 19) in Minneapolis, Minn. The dual is scheduled for a 1 p.m. CST start at Maturi Pavilion and will be broadcast live on B1G+.
