RESULTS
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – In a contest featuring top-10 nationally-rated Division III squads, Calvin was outmatched by the Chicago Maroons 168-129 on Saturday afternoon at the Venema Aquatic Center. The Knights now hold a 4-6 record in dual meet events this season.
Calvin came into the competition ranked ninth nationally, while Chicago was positioned fourth. Before the event commenced, Calvin recognized the eight members of its senior cohort.
Junior Charles Platt (Downers Grove, Il./Downers Grove North HS) had an outstanding meet for the Knights, securing victories in the 100 backstroke (49.61) and 200 backstroke (1:47.94), also leading off Calvin’s first-place 200 medley relay team that finished with a time of 1:27.94. Platt was joined in the relay by junior Timothy Hays (Arlington Heights, Il./Prospect HS), senior Logan Campbell (Yorkville, Il./Yorkville HS) and senior David Bajwa (Bethesda, Md./The Heights School).
Senior Wil Goodpaster (Hamilton, Mich./Hamilton HS) also had a phenomenal day, winning the one-meter diving event (335.02) and three-meter diving event (308.40). Both scores were season-high performances for Goodpaster.
Bajwa secured second place in the 200 freestyle (1:41.17). Calvin achieved 2-3 finishes in the 100 breaststroke with Hays taking second (56.29) and junior Caleb Gemmen (Mentor, Oh./Home School) taking third (56.80). Hays also finished third in the 100 butterfly (50.53). Gemmen additionally placed third in the 200 breaststroke (2:09.93).
Calvin managed 2-3 finishes in the 200 butterfly as well. Junior Jake Schotanus (Versaille, Ky. Woodford County) was second (2:00.35) and senior Ethan Wayne (Canton, Mich. Canton) came in third (2:05.48).
Sophomore Andrew Stimpert (Normal, IL Normal West) finished third in the 500 freestyle (4:47.40) and the 1000 freestyle (10:04.01). Sophomore Ryan Halberg (Novi, Mich./Northville HS) also took third place in the 400 IM (4:12.76).
Calvin’s 200 freestyle relay team of Bajwa, graduate student Vlad Molin (Rolling Meadows, Ill. Rolling Meadows), Seidelman and Platt finished second in a time of 1:21.15.
COACH’S REMARK: “We honored the seniors today with fantastic performances and teamwork,” stated Calvin head coach Dan Gelderloos. “Our women’s team achieved a great victory which was quite an upset, and we previewed a team we will encounter at the NCAA competition.”
