With frigid conditions and snowfall throughout the day, Boulder County transformed into a winter wonderland for those daring enough to face the chill this weekend.

By Saturday at 3 p.m., Boulder had accumulated 8.3 inches of snow in a 24-hour period, as reported by the National Weather Service. Longmont saw four inches of snow fall within the same timeframe.

Skiers and sled enthusiasts reveled in the soft, white snow in Boulder at well-known sledding areas like Scott Carpenter Park and popular cross country skiing locations such as North Boulder Park.

Individuals of all ages enjoyed the wintry scenery in Longmont as well, particularly at Roosevelt Park. Locals Sara Murphy and Scott Minchin visited the park for some afternoon cross country skiing.

Murphy expressed their eagerness to experience the “first significant snowfall of the season.”

“We haven’t had much this year,” she mentioned. “Last year was rather disappointing. I was looking forward to a delightful snow day today.”

Murphy noted that she and Minchin endeavor to cross country ski at least once annually.

“I enjoy the sensation of gliding,” Murphy stated. “It also serves as a great workout.”

Minchin commented that there wasn’t sufficient snow in Roosevelt Park for a perfect day of cross country skiing, yet the quantity was better than usual.

“There’s never enough snow,” Minchin remarked. “We receive snow and then it vanishes in two hours.”

Both Minchin and Murphy noted they relocated to Colorado from New Jersey, and have been in Longmont for seven years. As snow enthusiasts, they hope Colorado receives more snow regularly.

“We expected it to be like this every day throughout winter,” Minchin said, referring to the snowfall. “We were driving around all night yesterday, watching it come down.”

Andrew Hernandez and Corbin Pineda, both students from Westview Middle School, were playing football in the snow at Roosevelt Park. Their game ultimately transitioned into a snowball fight.

“I adore snow,” Andrew stated. “I love how it appears.”

The Roosevelt Park Ice Pavilion continued to welcome ice skaters on Saturday. Rink attendant Zander Salva noted that poor road conditions can occasionally prevent visitors from coming to the rink, yet the pavilion remained busy on Saturday.

Public Skate Hours: January 7 through March 4, 2025
Tuesdays, 1-3pm
Fridays, 4-6pm
Saturdays, 1-4pm
Sundays, 1-6pm

“It was crowded because individuals have classes they’ve already enrolled in,” Salva noted. “So, they aren’t likely to skip those.”
