Dramatic Showdowns: Men’s Swimming Triumphs Over Cleveland State While Women Face Tough Losses to Duquesne and CSU

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – George Mason junior Tate Anderson clinched three individual events to propel the Patriots’ men’s squad past Cleveland State, while the women’s side was defeated by Duquesne and Cleveland State on Saturday in Pittsburgh, Pa.

The Patriots men’s group claimed victory in nine events, overcoming the Vikings with a score of 148-113. The women’s team suffered losses against the Dukes, 210.5-70.2, and the Vikings, 157-124.

On the men’s front, Anderson triumphed in the 50-yard freestyle (20.49), 100-yard freestyle (44.68), and 200-yard freestyle (1:36.73).

Junior Aoun Al-Hiari excelled in both the 200-yard butterfly (1:51.48) and the 100-yard butterfly (49.11). Sophomore Ian Rodgers earned first place in the 100-yard backstroke (49.17) and 200-yard backstroke (1:47.65).

Senior Tyler Lentine led the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing first (2:03.10). Sophomore Alex Crown secured the top position in the 500-yard freestyle (4:39.03) and came in second for the 400-yard IM (4:03.51).

Sophomore Cody Scifres achieved second place in the 200-yard freestyle (1:43.33) and finished third in the 500-yard freestyle (4:48.28).

The Patriots were victorious in both relay events. In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the team composed of graduate student Kyle Johnson, senior Zane Roberts, Anderson, and Rodgers claimed first place (1:21.77). The squad of Rodgers, Lentine, Al-Hiari, and Roberts won the 200-yard medley relay (1:30.39).

For the women’s team, senior Ali Tyler emerged victorious in the 100-yard freestyle (51.67). In the 200-yard butterfly, graduate student Abigail Murtaugh came in second (2:04.46).

Senior Emma DeJong finished third in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.94) and was fifth in the 100-yard freestyle (52.63).

Senior Sydney Atkins placed third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.89), while sophomore Kristen Ivey took fourth (1:55.11). Ivey also finished fifth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:09.14).

Senior Peyton Brehmer secured fourth place in the 50-yard freestyle (24.14). In the 400-yard IM, sophomore Casey Tingen finished fourth (4:34.87) and junior Gracie Sweeney was fifth (4:45.58).

During the 200-yard medley relay, senior Shannon Judge, Tyler, DeJong, and Brehmer teamed up to finish third (1:45.12). The combination of sophomore Hannah Magdeburg, Tyler, Brehmer, and Judge ended up in second (1:35.75).

The Patriots will conclude their home schedule by hosting Towson on Saturday, Jan. 25, with the meet set to commence at noon at the Aquatic and Fitness Center.
