Eagles Grounded: A Spectacular Clash of Vandals and Valor

Moscow, ID – What an occasion to be a Vandal. 

Following the women’s team triumph over Eastern Washington in a thrilling 67-57 afternoon match, the Idaho men’s squad took the floor in the ICCU Arena, eager to replicate that success in front of an enthusiastic crowd.

With the loyal Vandal supporters behind them, the black and gold played with passion and vigor throughout the night, defeating the Eagles 83-76, bolstered by an unyielding offensive effort and a defense that performed when it was most needed. In total, five Vandals scored in double digits, and six players achieved 9 or more points.

Making a significant impact and receiving accolades from his head coach was sophomore guard Kristian Gonzalez, who shot 8-14 (57%) and 3-7 (43%) from three-point range for a total of 20 points and drew a foul on a crucial layup with less than a minute to play, effectively sealing the victory. 

Julius Mims demonstrated efficiency in the paint, ending with 7-9 (78%) to total 14 points alongside six rebounds and two blocks. Jack Payne recorded 4-9 (44%) for 13 points, five rebounds, and five assists. Tyler Mrus was a dominating presence throughout the floor, notching twelve points and six rebounds, while Kolton Mitchell finished 5-10 (50%) contributing eleven points. 

One statistic worth mentioning is that the Vandals did not miss a single free throw, finishing flawlessly at 15-15, with Tyler Linhardt sinking all six of his attempts and Jack Payne going 4-4. 

Tempers were high, but the turnaround will be swift, as the Vandals are heading on the road to Missoula, Montana, for a rematch against the Montana Grizzlies on Monday, Jan. 20, at 6:00 PM PST
