ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The University of Michigan men’s track and field team secured a first-place victory at home on Saturday (Jan. 18) as the organizer of the Simmons-Harvey Invitational.

U-M achieved first place with a total of 105.5 points, with Michigan State in second place (102.5) and Purdue in third (69).

Corey Royster (6.91 seconds) and Amit Rutman (7.00) qualified for the finals in the 60-meter dash, where Royster concluded in third place (6.88) and Rutman in fifth (7.02). Royster’s time in the finals was merely 0.09 seconds short of equaling his personal record.

During the 400-meter dash, Lawrence Gilliam achieved a personal-best time of 48.27, earning a second-place finish. Nick Butler-Simpson also registered a personal-best time of 48.76, resulting in a fourth-place finish.

Jonathan Miles claimed victory in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:49.79, coming just 0.29 seconds short of matching the No. 10 time on the program’s performance records. The Wolverines achieved a 1-2-3-4 finish in the mile, where Henry Johnson took first (4:06.21), Nathan Lopez came in second (4:06.25), Peter Baracco placed third (4:06.64), and Ian Hill finished fourth (4:07.85). Johnson, Lopez, and Baracco all set personal-best times.

The throwing squad remains impressive, with four top-five finishes over two events. Zane Forist secured third in the shot put with a distance of 17.05 meters (55 feet, 11.25 inches), while Josh Huisman finished in fourth place with a throw of 16.78m (55-0.75). In the weight throw, Eli Winter came in second (19.55m/64-1.75), and Jake Steslicki took fourth (18.59m/61-0.00).

U-M is set to compete at the Crossroads of America Invitational on Friday and Saturday (Jan. 24-25) in Indianapolis, Ind., at the Indiana Farm Bureau Fall Creek Pavilion.
