FORT MYERS, Fla. – The women’s tennis squad of Florida Gulf Coast University secured their second consecutive triumph of the season with a remarkable 4-2 victory against Big Ten Conference member, the University of Minnesota, on Saturday evening.

“Today represented an exceptionally thrilling match; the ladies are battling fiercely and giving their all,” said FGCU head women’s tennis coach Courtney Vernon. “A heartfelt congratulations to the three freshmen for their bold efforts on the court today and a very heartfelt thank you to our fans and supporters who remained throughout the entire match.” 

 

The doubles contest commenced with tension as the Golden Gophers (1-1) claimed two doubles matches to establish a 1-0 lead heading into singles. Minnesota extended its advantage to 2-0 when Paloma Goldsmith lost her match with a score of 6-3, 6-2 on court No. 2.

Isabella Colmenares responded for the Eagles, winning 6-4, 6-4 over Mia Liepert on court No. 2. The Green & Blue then brought the match to a tie as freshman  Anjali Kotecha triumphed 7-5, 7-6 (10-8) on court No. 3.

Nora Svensson provided the Eagles with the pivotal point as she battled through three sets to secure a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 victory.

The audience watched intently on court one as freshman Ashley Matz fought through three sets to emerge victorious and clinch the match for FGCU, winning 7-6 (9-7), 4-6, 6-4 in her debut performance on court No. one.

Senior Gabriela Macias lost her first set 3-6 but achieved a 7-6 (2) comeback victory in the second set and was leading 2-1 in the third set before the match was halted.

The Eagles are set to compete again on Monday against Columbia University at 10 a.m.
