CHICOPEE, Mass. — An individual with multiple active warrants for his arrest sought to escape law enforcement by entering the Chicopee River, only to be apprehended by the city’s fire crew, according to the police department.

Initially, officers “established contact” with the individual and tried to detain him; however, he fled from the police on foot, sprinting along the riverbank and into the water. The man made his way to an island within the river, attempting to evade capture, as reported by the police in a Facebook post.

Subsequently, law enforcement employed a drone to locate the man and called upon the fire department to assist in his capture. The fire department deployed a small yellow raft onto the river and retrieved the individual, who was then quickly arrested.

He was transported to a medical facility for assessment due to his time in the water and exposure to freezing temperatures.

The two individuals were donned in PPE and asserted to be affiliated with a non-existent fire department in Oregon, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
