Postpone travel tonight and early Monday, as moist pavement resulting from rain and snow on Sunday poses a threat for icy road conditions as temperatures decline

FREDERICKSBURG – Hazardous driving conditions may occur overnight and early Monday in the Fredericksburg vicinity, Northern Neck, and Middle Peninsula as damp pavement is likely to freeze overnight with falling temperatures.

Crews from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) worked on roads Sunday to address slick conditions as required during a wintry mix accompanied by light snowfall. Although snow accumulation was minimal, travelers are advised to continue postponing non-essential travel until late Monday morning due to the potential for icy roads. Slippery conditions are particularly probable to develop on elevated infrastructure, such as bridges, ramps, and overpasses.

Bitterly low temperatures are anticipated tonight through Thursday morning. VDOT crews will persist in their emergency response efforts to distribute road treatment materials aimed at enhancing vehicle traction and mitigating the threat of icy patches from overnight refreezing. Each morning, VDOT Park and Ride commuter lots will also be treated.

If travel must take place overnight and early Monday, verify local weather updates and road conditions at 511Virginia for your entire journey prior to commencing travel. Weather and road conditions can differ throughout the state. If you do travel, please ensure you wear your seat belt. Avoid passing vehicles applying treatment materials. Prepare to lower speed and increase following distance between vehicles. Allow additional travel time to prevent being rushed.
