Prices for air travel and lodging in Washington, D.C., have reached unprecedented heights due to Inauguration Day; however, for those intending to visit D.C. after the inauguration, expenses are anticipated to fall.

President Donald Trump has attracted crowds from across the nation who came to the capital to witness the momentous swearing-in ceremony, causing tourists to incur higher costs for travel and accommodations.

According to Google Flights search data, inquiries for flights to D.C. during Inauguration Week rose by nearly 50% compared to the previous week.

Recent data from Hotels.com and Booking.com disclosed hotel rates during inauguration week, with prices soaring within the $1,000 range and reaching as high as $3,000 or more per night. Rates are expected to decline by 50% to 85% at numerous hotels following Jan. 20.

The typical rate for a hotel room over the inauguration weekend in D.C. was approximately $700, while the standard weekend hotel price in the city usually hovers around the $300 mark.

Last-minute airfares to the city were proving to be quite expensive for travelers, with a round-trip fare from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, at $1,888 and a round trip ticket from Dallas, Texas, to D.C. totaling $760.

When comparing these rates to later this week, a round trip from Dallas to Washington, D.C. will only cost travelers $180 — indicating that inauguration travel from Dallas alone increased by more than 420%.

Similarly, the same flight from Fort Lauderdale to the nation’s capital will be priced at $323 next week — a significant 584% decrease compared to the days closer to Jan. 20.

Flight costs are projected to start declining on Thursday, Jan. 23, with Friday being a more economical day for flights into the capital, based on ongoing air travel searches for D.C.

Hotel rates are set to revert to their average price by Thursday and achieve a standard pricing level by Friday, mirroring the trend of airfares.

“Airfare prices will always surge with heightened demand. Bear in mind, this is also a holiday weekend on top of the excitement from the inauguration, which has caused an additional influx in attendance due to many people having that extra day off work,” shared Kristin Petersen, a travel advisor for Travelmation, with Fox News Digital.

“As the celebrations come to an end and the dignitaries depart, you will witness travel fares returning to their usual rates.”

Prices will fluctuate based on your region, suggesting some areas might still grapple with high rates until the following week, eventually reverting to standard pricing by early February, Petersen mentioned.

“Since the inauguration was relocated indoors, they began to dismantle the setup in front of the Capitol Building, thus visitors will not be able to see any remnants of the inauguration,” she stated regarding travelers currently in, or soon visiting D.C.

“I recommend making a reservation to tour the Capitol Building and view the Rotunda in person if you plan to visit at any time in the future.”
