Researchers from around the globe have consistently been baffled regarding the formation of the Moon and the factors that facilitated its evolution. With significant missions directed towards the Moon, a fresh investigation now illuminates its origin narrative.

Though one of the leading hypotheses suggests that the Moon was created from an impact between the primordial Earth and the protoplanet Theia, investigators at the University of Gottingen along with the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research have now disclosed it might have emerged from material released from the Earth’s mantle.

The discoveries additionally suggest an intriguing occurrence on Earth — water. The research suggests that water could have been delivered to Earth early in its formation and might not have been introduced by later impacts.

“One theory posits that Theia lost its rocky mantle in prior collisions and then collided with the early Earth like a metallic cannonball. If this scenario holds true, Theia would constitute part of the Earth’s core currently, and the Moon would have formed from expelled material from the Earth’s mantle. This would clarify the resemblance in composition between the Earth and the Moon,” stated Professor Andreas Pack, Managing Director of Gottingen University’s Geoscience Centre and Head of the Geochemistry and Isotope Geology Division.

The team studied oxygen isotopes from 14 lunar samples and conducted 191 analyses on minerals sourced from Earth. Isotopes are variants of the same element that only differ in the weight of their nucleus.

The recent measurements reveal a significant similarity between samples obtained from both Earth and the Moon regarding an isotope known as oxygen-17 (17O).

The information also provides revelations about Earth’s water history. A generally accepted theory proposes that water arrived on Earth after the Moon’s formation, during a succession of impacts referred to as the “Late Veneer Event.”

Given that Earth encountered these impacts much more often than the Moon, there should be observable differences in oxygen isotopes, which reflect the origin of the material causing the impacts.

The team excluded meteor impact as an origin of water in the research published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
