China Unveils Enhanced Visa-Free Transit Policy to Ignite Global Travel Excitement

In its ongoing commitment to enhance interactions and partnerships between Chinese nationals and international visitors, the Chinese authorities have further widened its visa-free transit regulations to foster people-to-people interactions between China and foreign nations.

On December 17, 2024, the National Immigration Administration (NIA) of China officially declared a major enhancement of its visa-free transit policy, taking effect immediately. According to the updated regulations, the visa-free transit duration has been increased from the previous 72 or 144 hours to 240 hours (10 days).

Moreover, 21 additional entry points have been incorporated, raising the cumulative number of visa-free entry/exit locations to 60. The policy’s geographic scope has been broadened to encompass five new provinces: Shanxi, Anhui, Jiangxi, Hainan, and Guizhou, bringing the total to 24 provinces and further extending the areas allowed for stay and activities.

This policy is applicable to citizens from 54 nations, including Russia, Brazil, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada. Eligible travelers must be en route to a third nation or area. They must possess an interline ticket (connecting ticket) confirming their departure date and seat number destined for a third country or zone within 240 hours. Upon entry through any of the 60 ports, eligible travelers may remain for no more than 240 hours.

During 2024, China continued to refine its regulations on visa-free transit, regional visa-free entry, and visas at entry points, thereby broadening the extent of unilateral and mutual visa-free access and continually increasing the convenience for foreigners visiting and residing in China.

The broadened visa-free transit policy is anticipated to generate substantial economic advantages, marking a crucial advancement in China’s persistent initiatives to enhance its international reach.
