THE Selangor administration’s move to increase its plastic bag prohibition to three days a week, from just Saturdays, is a praiseworthy advancement in tackling plastic pollution.

This initiative is focused not only on alleviating the issues related to plastic waste but also on confronting the behavioural challenges that impede the establishment of sustainable habits.

Addressing the hurdles of entrenched behaviours and systemic weaknesses necessitates cooperative solutions from both the government and the public.

The enhancement of the plastic-free initiative is anticipated to build on successful programmes like door-to-door recycling efforts, which have shown the potential of collective engagement.

Community-led waste management strategies, when combined with strong policies, can result in significant decreases in plastic waste. This way, Selangor can further lessen its reliance on plastics, in line with its overarching objectives of reducing landfill dependency and supporting a circular economy.

Extending the ban would encourage consumers to reconsider their dependence on single-use plastics. It compels businesses to seek eco-friendly alternatives and motivates the community to use reusable bags.

Nevertheless, its efficacy depends on addressing fundamental behavioural challenges. A considerable number of individuals own reusable bags but frequently neglect to take them along. This is especially an issue for those without personal transport, making the availability of plastic bags at the point of sale the default selection.

By eliminating this choice, consumers will gradually develop the habit of remembering their reusable bags. Awareness is key in the fight against plastics, and ensuring that the public is informed about the three-day ban will help them to recall bringing reusable bags.

To reinforce the ban, the government and enterprises should implement pragmatic solutions that can facilitate sustainable behaviours for everyone.
