(ABC 6 News) – With temperatures well below 0F, the chill outside is serious and should not be underestimated. Nonetheless, there are enjoyable activities you can partake in during the cold that can infuse some cheer into the frigid conditions.

Meteorologist Aidan Cera performed several experiments on Monday to demonstrate some intriguing effects that cold weather can produce, many of which you can replicate at home!

One experiment consists of combining dish soap with water, then blowing bubbles into the icy atmosphere. If it’s not too breezy, you may catch some of these bubbles and allow them to settle for a while. Believe it or not, these bubbles will freeze, revealing stunning ice crystal designs! It also appears quite cool, albeit odd, to witness a solid bubble that breaks apart upon contact with any solid object.

Another entertaining experiment you can try involves freezing some ice, sprinkling common table salt over it, and adding a few drops of food coloring. Over time, as the salt dissolves the ice, you’ll observe colored tunnels forming, creating a vibrant multi-hued spectacle!

Additional experiments include soaking a shirt or pants in warm water, then promptly taking them outside. It will emit steam for several minutes before solidifying like…well…ice! Crumple it slightly and you’ll hear the ice cracking inside the fabric! No concerns, it won’t harm the clothing.

A more challenging experiment you might attempt is seeing if you can freeze a banana sufficiently to hammer a nail into wood with it! This particular experiment requires extra caution, and for any children interested, adult supervision is strongly advised.

Of course, if you’re venturing outdoors in the next day or two, ensure you dress warmly, as frostbite can set in within just a few minutes in these temperatures!
