To stimulate public discussion on significant topics in photography, CPW provides exhibitions, workshops, artists’ discussions, and access to its Digital Media Lab. Besides its public initiatives, CPW aids artists via its longstanding Artist-in-Residence (AIR) program, launched in 1999 to promote critical conversation on diversity, race, and identity within the framework of social justice, having assisted over 150 artists, including LaToya Ruby Frazier, Deana Lawson, and Paul Mpagi Sepuya. The upcoming application window will take place from December 16, 2024, to January 31, 2025. CPW also serves as an educational venue: its program Sanctuary City, Stories of Immigration and Community, spearheaded by Wendy Ewald, empowers immigrant students at Kingston High School to narrate the histories of their homelands and adopted communities through photography.
