Big Bend’s Winter Storm Wreaks Havoc: Crashes, Road Closures, and Travel Restrictions Unfold

GADSDEN COUNTY, Fla. (WCTV) – As an uncommon winter storm moves across the Gulf Coast, road conditions are becoming more treacherous and slick. Below is an ongoing compilation of accidents, road closures, and travel restrictions in the Big Bend and South Georgia.

A travel restriction has been enacted in Thomas County as of Tuesday evening, according to the Thomas County Sheriff. Motorists found on the roads will incur fines up to $1,000, the department states.

Moreover, Tallahassee Police reported just prior to 11:30 p.m. Tuesday that Thomasville Road has been closed in both directions at Raymond Diehl Road “until further notice due to icy conditions.”

As per Florida 511, collisions have occurred at:

• Mile marker 167 on I-10 West in Gadsden County
• Exit 174 on I-10 West in Gadsden County
• Mile marker 197 on I-10 West in Leon County
• Mile marker 207 on I-10 West in Leon County
• Mile markers 216, 217, 218, and 221 on I-10 westbound in Monticello

According to Florida Highway Patrol and Florida 511, there are closures at:

• The flyover at Thomasville Road and I-10 is covered in ice and will be “closed until further notice,” as reported by a social media announcement from the City of Tallahassee
• The left lane of I-10 West at mile marker 185 following a significant accident in Gadsden County
• All lanes are blocked on I-10 West at mile marker 185 following a significant accident in Gadsden County
• The right lane on I-10 West near mile marker 193 in Leon County is obstructed due to an accident
• I-10 eastbound near mile marker 186 in Midway is closed
• A stalled vehicle in Chattahoochee is causing a blockage on Flat Creek Road
• A blockage is present on the exit ramp near mile marker 161 eastbound in Chattahoochee after an accident

Travel warnings have been issued for the following regions, as noted by Florida Highway Patrol:

• Bridge frozen over near mile marker 196 on I-10
• FHP has reported icy conditions on Blue Star Highway
