Foster Honored as 2024 ACM Fellow: A Distinction in Excellence

The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) has honored Nate Foster, a professor of computer science at Cornell’s Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science, as a 2024 Fellow for his “contributions to applications of programming languages to networking.”

Foster is one of 55 fellows that ACM has chosen from its membership this year. His research is centered on creating languages and tools that assist programmers in developing secure and dependable systems. At present, his team is crafting and implementing domain-specific languages for programming computer networks. This methodology simplifies network management while enhancing network reliability through formal verification of correctness properties.

Established in 1947, ACM is the largest and most esteemed organization for computing professionals. Its ACM Fellows program honors the elite 1% of its members for their remarkable achievements in computing and information technology research, as well as for exceptional service to the organization and the broader computing community.

In the past, Foster has been awarded the Robin Milner Young Researcher Award, a Sloan Research Fellowship, an NSF CAREER Award, the SIGCOMM Rising Star Award, a Tien ‘72 Teaching Award, the Morris and Dorothy Rubinoff Award, and Research Excellence Awards from both Cornell Bowers CIS and Cornell Engineering. 

Foster earned his Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Pennsylvania, his M.Phil. in history and philosophy of science from Cambridge University, and his B.A. in computer science from Williams College.
