Revolutionizing Wellbeing: A Couple’s Journey to Health Transformation with the Center for Health Promotion

Maria Carranza faced quite a challenge in persuading her spouse Julio to accompany her, but ultimately he gave in. A friend recommended the Diabetes Education program at Paradise Valley Hospital’s Center for Health Promotion to Maria because of Julio’s persistent diabetes-associated discomfort. After attending a class herself and being impressed, she began to take Julio along with her. Initially, he was reluctant. “I used to hide,” he admitted.

Julio was doubtful; however, Maria was astonished by the insights she gained from the diabetes educator, Elizabeth Lucero. Before participating in the classes, she had believed that both she and Julio were consuming healthfully. But Elizabeth guided her in understanding the impact of carbohydrates and sugars on nutrition, as well as what constitutes healthy portion sizes. She also recognized the significance of exercise and sufficient sleep. Julio revealed that previously, he used to consume around 15 tortillas daily along with two liters of soda. “I always used to have two dinners a day!” he remarked, incredulously. Thanks to Elizabeth and the Center for Health Promotion, Maria and Julio have managed to reduce their carbohydrate and sugar consumption, limit their intake of fried and processed foods, and adopt healthier portion sizes. “Elizabeth is a blessing in our lives,” Maria stated. “She guided us on our journey!”

They have also embraced exercise as part of their daily routine. Together, Maria and Julio enjoy a daily walk in the park, and Julio takes every opportunity to ride his bicycle. Julio, who previously suffered from foot swelling and pain, indicates that those issues have dissipated. “Every pain has vanished!”

This represents a significant lifestyle transformation for them; although it may have been challenging initially, they are both savoring the fruits of their hard work. “We feel lighter, with increased energy,” Julio shared. “And we look good!” Maria commented. “Can’t you notice?”

Besides the diabetes education classes, Paradise Valley Hospital’s Center for Health Promotion provides individual counselling with licensed dietitians, health screenings, and a variety of other health-related courses, all free of charge.
