“Trump’s Bold Move: New Names for the Gulf of Mexico and Denali Mountain Unveiled”

In one of his initial actions as president, Donald Trump issued an executive order on Monday to rename the Gulf of Mexico and Denali in Alaska.

To begin, Trump dubbed the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America,” fulfilling a commitment made during his campaign. This body of water borders Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida.

“The Gulf will remain fundamental in influencing America’s future and the global economy, and in acknowledgment of this thriving economic resource and its vital significance to our Nation’s economy and its citizens, I am instructing that it be officially renamed the Gulf of America,” Trump stated in his executive order.

As stipulated in the executive order, the name must be officially altered by the Secretary of the Interior within 30 days. Nevertheless, on Monday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis referred to “Gulf of America” in a winter weather state of emergency declaration.

While Trump has renamed the waterway, other nations are not obligated to accept the modification, the Associated Press reported earlier this month. On Google Maps, the body of water was still identified as the Gulf of Mexico at the time of this publication.

Furthermore, Trump commanded that Denali in Alaska revert to the title “Mount McKinley,” named after former President William McKinley, the 25th leader of the U.S. (McKinley never visited Alaska in his lifetime.) The highest peak in North America was originally renamed to its Koyukon Athabascan title Denali, meaning “the high one” or “the great one,” in 2015 by former President Barack Obama to honor the heritage of Alaska natives.

This renaming will also take effect in 30 days; however, the designation of Denali National Park and Preserve, which encompasses the mountain, will remain unchanged.

While Trump adjusted the name, he instructed the Secretary of the Interior to “collaborate with Alaska Native entities and state and local organizations to select names for landmarks that honor the history and culture of the Alaskan population.”
