FARMINGTON, ME (January 21, 2025)—The UMF Art Gallery is thrilled to showcase ‘Take Only What You Can Carry,’ a real-life photographic exhibition by John Harlow, who is an alumnus of UMF Art and New Media from the class of 2013. The exhibition will be open from Thursday, Feb. 6 until March 28. An opening reception is set for Feb. 6, from 4-7 p.m. All events are free and accessible to the public.
Harlow’s photography and videography capture intimate, raw reflections of family dynamics, domestic environments, and personal turmoil. Motivated by dialogues and experiences during his photowalks in the impoverished and working-class areas of his native Skowhegan, his art embodies a deep empathy, blending elements of documentary photography with a painterly aesthetic that encourages viewers to confront discomfort, beauty, and vulnerability simultaneously.

A notable aspect of Harlow’s work is his profound empathy. These are his communities and environments. Despite the often harsh topics, his visuals never come across as exploitative or sensationalized. Instead, they stir a significant compassion for the humanity of his subjects, showcasing their perspectives, weaknesses, joys, and intricacies.
His images serve as a reminder that elegance can be found even amidst the most challenging and tumultuous situations—often specifically due to them. He is an artist whose creations resonate with the complexities of family, memory, and the human experience. The ability to encapsulate both the mundane and the remarkable in a single shot or brief interview is what renders his work so engrossing, offering a rare and unguarded insight into the raw, unedited realities of life.
Harlow completed his studies at the University of Maine at Farmington in 2013, obtaining a degree in art and new media. Shortly after earning his degree, he took the role of director at Somerset Community TV11, enhancing and updating the channel’s technology and programming. He is also involved with the media lab at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. His photographs were showcased in the 2018 Portland Biennial. Harlow actively participates in the Wesserrunsett Arts Council (WesArts).
The UMF Art Gallery is committed to providing contemporary art to the campus and surrounding communities. The gallery is situated at 246 Main Street, behind the Admissions Office.
Gallery hours are from Tuesdays to Sundays 12-4 p.m., and by appointment. For further details or to schedule an appointment, please reach out to Sarah at maline@maine.edu or 207-778-1062.
