SAN JOSE, Calif. – During its yearly winter disclosure here today, Samsung introduced the Galaxy S25-series, a trio of premier smartphones featuring an appealing one-stop-shop concept for AI. Notably, the tech giant also incorporated numerous new functions and performance enhancements to attract potential purchasers who may not have any interest in AI.

Last year – often hailed from the beginning as the Year of AI – suppliers quickly recognized that there was a demand among consumers for phone upgrades. However, this desire was not driven by the presence of AI in new models. Instead, consumers aimed to acquire newer devices due to their vastly superior performance in daily tasks compared to their existing phones.

“A year ago, we were the first significant producer out of the blocks with what we labeled a new era of AI,” Dave Das, Executive Vice President overseeing Samsung’s US Mobile division, mentioned to me. “We were pioneers in the market. Our enthusiasm was high, and we committed considerable resources to it.”

Das continued: “In hindsight, it appears quite clear, but we came to realize after several months that many of our clients were still purchasing phones primarily for the camera quality, battery longevity, display excellence – classic hardware advantages that, as an industry, we’ve been promoting for many years.”

Despite Samsung launching some of the most favored AI features of 2024 during the S24-series premiere last January, it wasn’t a deterrent. One such capability – Circle to Search, which retrieves information online about highlighted content in a photo – currently engages 10 million users, 2 million of whom utilize it daily.

Camera enhancement

Given this context, it is hardly surprising that the S25, the first major smartphone introduced in the year following the Year of AI, is packed with traditional enhancements. For instance, the ultrawide lens – one of four rear-facing lenses on the S-series Ultra – has been upgraded from 12MP to 50MP. The other primary camera (200MP) and the dual telephoto lenses (50MP and 10MP) remain unchanged from the S24 Ultra.

From a purely specifications standpoint, the combination of the two 50MP lenses alongside the 200MP lens gives the S25 Ultra a competitive advantage. In comparison, several of the latest premium

Android competitors offer three 50MP cameras. Meanwhile, the highest-tier iPhone, the iPhone 18 Pro Max, combines two 48MP lenses with a 12MP telephoto lens.

Performance supremacy

Additionally, the S25-series smartphones distinguish themselves with what benchmarks indicate is the most significant single-year advancement in capability and effectiveness that Samsung – or any Android smartphone producer, for that matter – has experienced in an extended period.

This is largely attributed to a higher-capacity, Samsung-exclusive version of Qualcomm’s revolutionary smartphone chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy. This customized chipset achieves performance and efficiency metrics that surpass Apple’s finest, the A18 Pro chipset found in the iPhone 16 Pro Max.

All three models within the S25-series are now available for preorder, with devices set to reach consumers starting February 7. Prices are as follows: $799.99 (S25), $999.99 (S25+) and $1,299.99 (S25 Ultra).

Moreover, there’s the astounding next-gen AI platform you may not yet have taken into consideration. Be sure to continue reading.

No app needed

One of the most impressive features of the new AI platform is its integration within Samsung’s personalized Android interface known as One UI. With the latest version, One UI 7, on an S25-series device, you won’t need to switch between applications to plan an outing with friends.

Just communicate with the Personal Data Engine. This is One UI 7’s all-encompassing facilitator, which adapts to become your assistant. It will determine which applications to use and what tasks it needs to undertake.

Press the home button for a moment and start speaking: “Discover a free evening when the Suns are competing and Betsy and Steve are around. Ask my wife if she wants to invite them over for dinner. If she agrees, let’s organize a barbecue if the weather is pleasant or order pizza if it aren’t.”

From just that one prompt, the Personal Data Engine will generate a to-do list and take action.

You don’t know me yet!

The Personal Data Engine doesn’t merely wait for instructions. It actively observes what it can do to enhance and simplify your life. What it ultimately learns to provide for you is unpredictable. However, there are evident tasks, like identifying the information you prefer to have readily available, whether it’s updates about basketball or tickets for Taylor Swift.

Samsung has already identified several capabilities. If you often doze off in front of the television, the Personal Data Engine can utilize your smartwatch to detect when you fall asleep. It will then gradually turn off the TV to ensure that you continue sleeping.

The Personal Data Engine is designed to retain all it learns about you – and how it assists you – on the device itself. Samsung’s Knox security technology helps ensure its protection.

“The S24 focused more on utilizing AI for specific tasks and functionalities,” remarked Samsung’s Das. “The S25 emphasizes natural interaction with the device to execute duties – tasks that previously required multiple steps.

“Combine that with the notion that we’re not neglecting hardware improvements,” Das elaborated.

As in the previous year, Samsung still needs attractive hardware to draw many consumers. However, what sets this launch apart is the possibility that the AI could be compelling enough to retain customer loyalty.
