BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – FIRST ALERT WEATHER DAY: A monumental winter storm continues to affect the southern region. Mobile reported more than 5” of snow today, shattering a daily record from 1881. Snow poses a concern and could lead to dangerous travel conditions in our southern areas. These perilous weather situations will last through tomorrow because of subzero temperatures, with black ice anticipated Thursday morning.
Meteorologist Matt Daniel is in Coosa County assessing conditions with the First Alert Storm Tracker. The snow line is not too far off, and we are experiencing considerable impacts just to our south, with multiple accidents occurring around the Montgomery areas and points south and east. These dangerous travel conditions in southern Alabama will continue well into tomorrow due to subfreezing temperatures. There will also be black ice concerns Thursday morning.
EXTREME COLD CONTINUES: The central narrative for us will remain the intensely cold conditions, with single-digit low temperatures possible in our area tonight. We should expect a clear sky tomorrow, with highs in the middle to upper 30s; however, prepare for lows to dip back into the teens tomorrow night.
THE NEXT SIGNIFICANT EVENT: Dry conditions will persist until Thursday, though we might experience some clouds and possibly light snow flurries again on Friday as an upper level trough moves across the state. Similar to this previous Sunday, a few snow showers could appear in the northernmost areas. Thus, we have noted a slight 20% chance for some light precipitation on Friday. The positive aspect is that forecast highs are in the 40s for Friday.
The upcoming weekend will be quite cold, yet we can expect highs to approach 50º by Sunday, accompanied by a return of rain chances late Sunday into Monday next week. Long-term forecasts suggest more seasonable temperatures for the next week. Stay warm and be safe out there. We will continue to provide updates on WBRC.
