Witness the Celestial Spectacle: Planets Align for a Month-Long Show!

In the upcoming weeks, an extraordinary procession of planets will illuminate the nocturnal heavens, presenting a celestial show that both novice and experienced stargazers can easily witness.

Throughout the month, four planets — Venus, Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars — will seem to align and be luminous enough to view with the unaided eye during the first hours post-sunset, as reported by NASA. Uranus and Neptune will also be present but will necessitate binoculars or telescopes for visibility.

“While these multi-planet viewing chances are not extremely rare, they do not occur annually, making it worthwhile to take a look,” NASA noted.

Since January commenced, Venus and Saturn have been coming nearer to one another. The peak occurred in mid-January when the two planets looked to be merely “a couple of finger widths away” from Earth’s view, according to NASA. (In reality, they were separated by hundreds of millions of miles.)

At the same time, Mars is at “opposition” this month. This is when a planet and the sun are in direct opposition to each other with Earth positioned in between. This astronomical event takes place approximately every two years for the red planet.

Opposition is “around the period when the planet is at its closest to Earth, causing it to appear its largest and brightest,” NASA stated.

For individuals intending to observe the celestial alignment, NASA mentioned that Venus and Saturn would be visible in the southwestern sky within the initial couple of hours after dark. During this interval, Jupiter will be gleaming high overhead while Mars rises in the eastern sky. A straightforward method to differentiate a star from a planet is that planets tend to shine steadily, whereas stars twinkle, as per NASA.

In June 2024, a planet parade including Saturn, the Moon, Mars, and Jupiter was visible in the morning sky, but only two planets were observable with the naked eye.
