A New Vision: Samsung and Google Join Forces to Revolutionize Augmented Reality Glasses

Samsung is advancing further into the wearable technology sector.

The tech corporation is collaborating with Google to create augmented-reality eyewear, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday. This new initiative was verified by TM Roh, the head of Samsung’s Mobile Experiences division, who informed the outlet that they “will attempt to achieve the quality and readiness we desire as swiftly as possible.” He provided minimal additional information regarding the specifications.

AR eyewear, which overlays information and visuals onto your view of the physical world, has proven challenging to manufacture thus far, Bloomberg pointed out. Apple, Meta, and Google are all striving to break through in this domain, but hurdles related to pricing and engineering have resulted in gradual advancements. Reportedly, Meta anticipates launching its Artemis AR glasses by 2027, the publication noted on Tuesday.

Samsung, on the other hand, is on the lookout for growth opportunities within its business, as per Bloomberg, and wearable technology might be a pathway to success. Last year, the corporation unveiled its Galaxy Ring, a smart accessory capable of monitoring heart rate, blood-oxygen levels, and various activity and stress indicators, among other metrics. Just last month, the technology giant declared that it was partnering with Google on the Project Moohan headset, a mixed-reality device positioned in a similar market as Apple’s Vision Pro.

The headset is anticipated to launch prior to Samsung’s AR eyewear, with Roh informing Bloomberg that the company is still finalizing the release date and pricing, although it aims for this year. While products like the Vision Pro haven’t resonated well with consumers, Samsung is optimistic that its headset will stand out: Roh mentioned that his company and Google are working with external partners to develop original content for the device, aspiring to make it a must-have piece of technology.

Both the headset and the AR eyewear—when they are unveiled—will operate on the new Android XR operating system, as noted by Bloomberg. Samsung and Google are collaborating as a unified team to develop the integrated OS, which will support various wearable headsets from both companies. And given that the Project Moohan headset could be released this year, it may not be long before we observe that in practice—or augmented reality, to be precise.
