Journey advisory: See newest ramp and freeway closures on I-81

Syracuse, N.Y. – The state Department of Transportation is warning motorists of a number of ramp and freeway closures on Interstate 81 and Route 481.

The closures are a part of the Interstate 81 Viaduct Project that features tearing down the elevated freeway that passes by way of Syracuse.

Motorists can anticipate the next closures:

• The on-ramp from Sunset Avenue I-81 North in Syracuse shall be closed from 7 a.m. to three p.m. Tuesday for the removing of the Bear Street bridge abutment and retaining wall. Detours take visitors north on Sunset Avenue to east on Bear Street to Lodi Street to I-81 North.

Motorists also needs to anticipate the next lane reductions alongside I-481 North and Route 481 North from 6 p.m. to six a.m. weeknights Tuesday to Saturday in Dewitt and Cicero.

• I-481 North shall be lowered to at least one lane between Exit 5W and Exit 6.
• I-481 North and Route 481 North between Exit 8 and Exit 1B

Reminder: I-81 shutdown at evening

I-81 in Syracuse shall be closed from 7 p.m. to six a.m. from by way of Saturday and Aug. 4 to Aug. 9 as crews work to demolish the East Glen Avenue bridge.

• I-81 North shall be closed between Exit 16A (I-481 North) and Exit 17 (South Salina Street/Brighton Avenue).
• I-81 South shall be closed between Exit 17 (South State Street/South Salina Street/Brighton Avenue) and the East Glen Avenue on-ramp to I-81 South.

Construction actions are weather-dependent and will change, DOT stated.

DOT urges drivers to decelerate and use warning in work zones. Fines are doubled for dashing in a piece zone, and two or extra convictions for dashing in a piece zone may end up in a suspended driver’s license.
