African Studies Association Announces Expansion of the Mahmoud Mohamed Taha Student Travel Award Fund
 
PISCATAWAY, New Jersey – The African Studies Association is happy to announce an extra growth of the Mahmoud Mohamed Taha Student Travel Award Fund to help analysis and the trade of concepts for African research college students. The growth of this Fund was made attainable by a beneficiant present from Dr. Steve Howard to scale the award’s impression.
 
The Mahmoud Mohamed Taha Student Travel Award, established in 2023 by a beneficiant present from Dr. Howard, is awarded to competitively chosen college students who’ve displayed excellent scholarship of their space of examine. The ASA invitations nominations from ASA members or functions from presently enrolled college students for funds to facilitate analysis, examine overseas, and/or journey to current analysis on the ASA Annual Meeting. Applications for African and African descended college students finding out at U.S. Institutions are prioritized throughout the choice course of. Applications will open on-line in December 2025 for the 2026 award cycle.

About Dr. Steve Howard
Dr. Howard grew up close to Boston, Massachusetts, graduated from Georgetown University, and determined to pursue a scholarly profession in African research following his Peace Corps service. He earned his PhD in sociology at Michigan State University, writing a dissertation on Sudan. Sudan has continued to be the middle of his analysis pursuits, writing notably in regards to the progressive Muslim social motion generally known as the Republican Brotherhood. Dr. Howard taught for 36 years at Ohio University and served 24 years because the establishment’s African Studies Program director – directing roughly 60 dissertations of African students. In 2022, Dr. Howard was awarded the ASA’s Distinguished Africanist Award.
