Broads nationwide park warns of impression of flea therapies for pets

The organisation that manages The Broads National Park has known as for higher consciousness of the “shocking” impression pet flea therapies have on waterways.

Powerful pesticides which are banned in farming as a result of their hurt to the surroundings are contained in “spot-on” merchandise used on cats and canines.

The chemical compounds pose “significant risks” to aquatic wildlife, whether or not from a canine swimming within the water or not directly when washing fingers or pet bedding, the Broads Authority mentioned.

The Broads Authority, which manages the park in Norfolk and Suffolk, said it welcomed the government’s new “highway map” to address the pollution.

“We hope that by including our title to the listing of organisations working to lift consciousness of this subject we will higher educate pet house owners and encourage them to vary their habits to assist our treasured wetland habitats,” added Ms Kelly.

The insecticides persist on a pet’s coat for week and the chemicals can remain active for up to 90 days, even though they kill fleas within 24-36 hours.

At particular risk are insects such as dragonflies, damselflies and freshwater beetles – all essential species for a healthy wetland system, the Broads Authority said.

They spend much of their life underwater and provide food for fish, birds, and other wildlife, and are “extraordinarily delicate” to pollution.

Studies have also shown that nests lined by birds with treated animal fur have a greater number of unhatched eggs or dead chicks, it said.

Dr Emily Nightingale, a vet near Ipswich, said the issue was “deeply regarding”.

“This is one thing that the vet sector has been for a lot of years – the broader unfold of the results of pesticides that we’re utilizing as a preventative in animals, as a therapy for fleas ticks, mites and worms.

“We need to make sure we are choosing the right treatment so it is appropriate for that animal and their environment, and to make sure we are not over-treating or under-treating.”

Announcing Defra’s roadmap in July, biosecurity minister Baroness Hayman mentioned it might develop a greater understanding of the impression of flea and tick therapies.

“This government is absolutely committed to restoring nature and reducing harms posed by chemicals in the environment,” she added.
