Just after the state warned about cyanobacteria bloom within the Charles River, the town has closed Crystal Lake for a similar subject.

Newton officers introduced on Wednesday that cyanobacteria (generally referred to as blue-green algae) blooms within the lake have been large enough to pose a hazard.

“In consultation with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH), Newton Health and Human Services (HHS) determined that all of Crystal Lake must be closed at this time because of potential health risks,” Mayor Ruthanne Fuller wrote in an e-mail to residents Wednesday.

Cyanobacteria typically grows in freshwater ponds, lakes and rivers throughout sizzling durations with little rain, when water is stagnant. When blooms get large enough, the water turns into poisonous. And pets are particularly weak.

“No one—humans or pets—should have contact with the water,” the mayor cautioned.

Don’t swim within the lake, don’t drink the water or let your pets drink it, don’t deliver boats onto the lake, keep away from contact with the water, hold pets away from it, and when you or your pets have come into contact with the water, rinse off instantly.

If you or your pets develop nausea, diarrhea or a fever after being close to the lake, you need to search medical consideration instantly.
