The Royal Australian College of GPs (RACGP) applauds Queensland Premier David Crisafulli asking individuals to talk with their GP about getting a flu shot.

The vaccination is free throughout the state and protects sufferers, their mates, and households towards influenza, a critical respiratory virus which might trigger hospitalisation or – in extreme instances and weak sufferers – even loss of life.

RACGP Queensland Chair Dr Cathryn Hester stated: “The faculty has strongly supported the Queensland Government’s free flu vaccination program and this is a chance to remind anybody who hasn’t had their jabs to take action as quickly as doable.

“In most age teams, Queensland lags behind the nationwide common of those that’ve had the jab, with just 17.9% of eligible people aged 15–50 receiving their vaccination.

“These individuals are more likely to be in crowded locations greater than anybody else as they’re commuting and socialising. If they’ve a contagious flu virus then it is unhealthy information for lots of people that they arrive in to contact with.

“We would reinforce Mr Crisafulli’s feedback when referring to Queenslanders going to their GP and taking his or her recommendation. It is a message we’d very a lot echo.

“There is no substitute for a specialist GP who knows you and your history so please speak to somebody who knows you about this issue. This virus can take your life, or the life of someone you love, and it must be taken seriously.”

In mid-July, elective surgical procedure at Queensland’s two greatest hospitals needed to be paused for 48 hours as a result of an influx of flu patients.

Less than 28% of Queenslanders have been vaccinated towards the flu this season – a charge that has progressively fallen because the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The vaccines are safe and completely free of charge,” Dr Hester stated.

“We believe that every state and territory should roll out their own scheme so no one misses out, particularly during a cost-of-living crisis.”
