Nadia Tecuapetla: Mexico City Moments, Quietly Extraordinary

Nadia Tecuapetla Ramírez was born and raised in Mexico City, a spot she describes as “mutating under an imposed modernity project.” Though modernity has introduced complexities, for Nadia, the town nonetheless carries an historic pulse beneath its floor — “a certain identity and ancient customs,” she says, “that often long for the past with nostalgia.”

Mexico City, she displays, is crammed with quiet hope — “This is a place where, at times, a shared desire among its inhabitants emerges — the persistence and hope for a better tomorrow.”

 

 

Nadia’s journey into images started early. As a baby, she would examine the outdated household portraits that hung in her grandparents’ home.

“The portraits sparked many questions in me about human existence,” she remembers. Those quiet moments of surprise planted a seed that will ultimately develop right into a lifelong calling.

 

 

“What led me to choose the photographic camera as a means of expression,” she explains, “was the realistic, symbolic, and emotional weight I found in discovering photography.”

Though her instant household wasn’t concerned within the arts, Nadia says, “my parents have always been characterized by a certain sensitivity toward various topics.” That sensitivity formed her view of the world — and of what artwork may very well be.

 

 

She later accomplished a journalism diploma, but it surely was the casual images courses, the books, the workshops, and the self-discovery that got here afterward that really fueled her path.

“I like it when the act of photographing catches me by surprise,” she notes. “Depending on the subject, sometimes I simply imagine hypothetical scenarios or potential shots; other times, deeper research is necessary if the theme demands it. I prefer my photographs to present a kind of personal challenge — I don’t want them to come too easily.”

 

 

“When I’m working on a photographic series, I focus on creating a visual narrative that can stand on its own — something expressive, with a meaning that’s felt and understood .”

 

 

Reflecting on her personal path, Nadia gives recommendation to her youthful self: “Believe in yourself more, dare more.” She gives the identical counsel to new generations of photographers.

“Look for your main reason for making photographs,” she urges. “But don’t let it be driven only by the need for public recognition and validation, because that becomes fleeting.”

Right now, Nadia is in a second of artistic introspection. “I’m trying to redirect what it is I want to continue photographing, so I don’t fall into a routine.”
