Insufficient monitoring leaves gaps in our data of Antarctica’s distinctive lifeforms and ecosystems – and their world significance

A brand new paper led by University of Wollongong researchers requires the pressing enlargement of long-term monitoring packages to higher perceive and shield Antarctica’s typically missed ecosystems. “Antarctica’s biodiversity is still largely a mystery. From emperor penguins to freeze-tolerant plants and tiny animals to microbes that live on air, how are they responding to growing threats?” research lead creator Dr Melinda Waterman stated. “Many of the species thriving beneath the ice shelves and across the harsh tundra are so little studied we’re only beginning to understand their roles. Long-term monitoring is our window into this hidden world, showing how subtle changes can ripple through entire ecosystems.”

The researchers reviewed almost 140 long-term research that monitored Antarctic animals and crops for greater than three years. More than half spanned 10 years or longer however most long-term research centered on penguins and marine mammals. Smaller life varieties, reminiscent of mosses and lichen, spawned fewer research.  Most analysis was targeting the extra accessible West Antarctic Peninsula, with few research in distant East Antarctica.

Distinguished Professor Sharon Robinson AM, who has spent greater than 30 years learning Antarctic crops, stated tiny organisms assist the continent’s complete meals net.  “Every moss patch, microscopic worm and deep-sea coral is part of a fragile balance. If we lose them, the consequences could be global. Sustained research gives policymakers the evidence needed to act on climate change and help Antarctica’s wildlife endure.”
