Fujita’s refuge on a Rainy Lake was the common-or-garden log cabin perched on a small island purchased in 1928 by his girlfriend, Florence Carr. He returned repeatedly by practice after which by boat from Ranier, Minn. It was his launching level for pictures of lake life writ massive: Anglers and their trophy fish; paddlers in silhouette; island landscapes; a shimmering moonscape – all have been amongst his targets.

Sometimes, Fujita included locals into the pictures to assist his aspect gig as a industrial photographer.

“He just had this lust for nature,” stated Lee, of Madison, Wis., the self-proclaimed household archivist. “And if you love it so much you have to go where it is the best. And he found Rainy Lake to be that.”

Fujita continuously shot pictures of individuals he encountered up north. Images like this one shot within the Thirties might have been used for his industrial pictures for Johnson Motor Company.
